When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike thinking her husband has gone off by himself for a few days—as he has done before. But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine's disappearance than his wife realizes.

When a mysterious package is delivered to Robin Ellacott, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but no less alarmed. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike is increasingly sure is not the perpetrator, he and Robin take matters into their own hands, and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men. A troubled young man named Billy comes to private eye Cormoran Strike’s office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child. Never tackling a cold case before, he’s intrigued and takes it on, adding to the long list of cases that he and his partner are currently working on. As Strike and Robin investigate Margot’s disappearance, they come up against a fiendishly complex case with a psychopathic serial killer and witnesses who cannot all be trusted.

When frantic, desperate Edie Ledwell appears in the office begging to speak to her, private detective Robin Ellacott doesn't know quite what to make of the situation. The co-creator of a popular cartoon, The Ink Black Heart, Edie is being persecuted by a mysterious online figure who goes by the pseudonym of Anomie. Edie is desperate to uncover Anomie's true identity.
